EMMA Hub
The EMMA Hub was founded in 1995, as BirthHouse Association, by a group of Hungarian rights activists and midwives. Their aim was to make homebirth legal in Hungary and end the prosecution and administrative harassment of midwives and obstetricians working to support women’s choice in childbirth. Having achieved the legalisation of homebirth in 2013, the organisation refocused its work to address human rights violations in institutional maternity care in Hungary, including violent and degrading treatment particularly of poor and ethnic minority women. EMMA Hub provides comprehensive support for women who have suffered birth-related trauma, and uses national and regional advocacy, campaigning and research to challenge the lack of transparency, accountability and respect for women in the maternal care system.
