Founded in 1995, the Media Institute of Southern Africa Zimbabwe (MISA Zimbabwe), a membership organisation of 200 journalists and media professionals, is one of the original chapters of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, an umbrella organisation which promotes and defends media freedoms and freedom of expression in Southern Africa. Since June 2021, MISA Zimbabwe assumes the role of Secretariat for the Media Institute, taking on regional coordinating responsibility to act as watchdog for media freedoms, including in the digital sphere, on top of its national role advocating for legal safeguards for freedom of expression and access to information, monitoring media freedoms developments and supporting journalists.
