Established in 2012 and based on Turkey’s southern coast, the Mediterranean Conservation Society (AKD) works to conserve the region’s biodiversity and support communities in developing locally appropriate sustainable livelihoods. With a particular focus on marine and coastal ecosystems, AKD’s ethos is one of conservation practice rooted in strong science, local culture and cooperation. The NGO’s activities include biodiversity research and monitoring; landscape-scale ecosystem restoration; protected area designation and management; advocacy for law and policy change; and the elaboration of sustainable livelihoods, in particular small-scale coastal fisheries.
