St Mary Magdalen
A registered ecclesiastical charity since 1999, St Mary Magdalen Church in Bermondsey has been home to an active congregation since the tenth century with the first known record of “Mary Magdalen Chapel in the hands of the Prior and Convent of Bermondsey” dating from 1290. The Church’s Grade II-listed building is about to undergo a major programme of preservation and structural strengthening work. In the scope of these improvements, the Church plans, with the support of the local council, to reserve a portion of the churchyard (now a park) for rewilding, creating a habitat for native species of plants and insects while offering the local community access to nature.
